How does a doctor on probation (see photo: 2009 signed document from the Medical Board of California)end up being in the top 10 prescriber's list for Seroquel prescriptions in the same calendar year? (2009)(see photo) Investigated by Senator Grassley--who asked the state of California for a list of top prescribers for several medications, investigating Medicaid, Medi-Cal billing charges.

The doctor on probation --Dr. Steve Balt-- in these documents, billed Medi-Cal for nearly 1/2 million dollars and prescribed 1,013 rx's for antipsyhotic Seroquel, while working under the rules of Medical Board license suspension. Were these prescription all for the 'treatment' of 'schizophrenia' or 'psychosis'? were they off-label for insomnia, anxiety or depression? this was in 2009, the year before the drug maker AstraZeneca was fined $520 million dollars by the Dept of Justice for the illegal marketing of Seroquel and Medicaid fraud. Were these 1000+ prescriptions rx'd by a doctor whose medical license was suspended? what are the implications of this information? were the rx's part of the Dept of Justice data? did any of these patients end up in legal proceedings for side effects of Seroquel (diabetes)?
