Serving on a Volunteer Board of Directors

A couple weeks ago I attended my first meeting as a new member of the Board of Directors of the New England Society for Healthcare Communications (NESHCo). I love this organization and am thrilled to serve on the Board. Over the years I've served on a number of volunteer boards and it has rarely been a positive experience. Admittedly I am biased by my experience, but my view is that too often the people serving on volunteer boards are looking for a platform to exert some power, because they have none in their life. That has no appeal for me. So I approach these opportunities with trepidation.

The great thing about the NESHCo Board is that it is composed of healthcare marketing professionals. These are busy, smart people. They are empowered decision-makers with a can-do attitude. I was so impressed listening to the conversation taking place in our first meeting. I've known many of these people casually for years, but never had a chance to interact with them in this manner. These are strategic thinkers. It was so energizing to sit there in a room with them and see where they could take an idea. I am thrilled when I think of the things we can accomplish together. Truly, the sky is the limit with this group.

My formal title is Director at Large #3. I'll wear it with pride! And I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as a volunteer for an organization that has been so good to me over the years. Onward and upward.
