Conference Alert: Marketers Influencing Population Health

It is a wonderful and rare thing when you come up with a big idea and it actually becomes a reality. I can recall speaking with my friend Lee Crouch, during a break at a healthcare marketing conference, about the opportunity we both saw for the New England Society of Healthcare Communications (NESHCo) to reach more people and grow its membership. During that conversation, perhaps two years ago, we developed the concept of a healthcare marketing road show. In concept, the road show would be a traveling healthcare marketing conference, reaching into remote parts of New England. This traveling conference would be in addition to NESHCo's annual Spring Conference. It would allow communications professionals at hospitals throughout New England, many of whom don't attend the annual conference, to access the thought leadership and best practices shared at that event - and do so at a lower cost.

I believe it was Lee Crouch who then recruited me to join the NESHCo membership committee - an amazing group of volunteers. Lee and I shared our "Road Show" concept with the group and they ran with it. It has taken us several months to iron out the details, but today the road show is a reality. Our concept has evolved, and now we are partnering with the hospital associations in various states to put on these one day conferences. Our first stop on the Healthcare Marketing Road Show will be in Burlington, Massachusetts on Friday, October 26th at the Massachusetts Hospital Association's Conference Center. The theme of the event is "Influencing Population Health: Making the Case for Wellness & Prevention." We've recruited some amazing speakers with national reputations. Our keynote speaker is the incomparable Chris Boyer of Inova Health. Chris will share details of Inova's "Fit for 50" wellness and prevention program. One of the things I love about Chris is that he will talk about measuring ROI. Another featured speaker is Zoe Finch Totten, founder of The Full Yield. I first learned of Zoe when I read about her in Fast Company magazine. The Full Yield is "committed to making food the centerpiece of a new paradigm in healthcare in order to reduce the risk of chronic diseases caused by poor diet. Their mission is to improve public health by making high-quality food, high-quality behavioral support, and high-quality education about food and health systemically sustainable." (Source: The Full Yield Website) After reading about Zoe, I wrote a blog post about her company, and then we connected by phone. I'm a huge fan of Zoe and wholeheartedly support the mission of her organization. We are fortunate to have both Chris Boyer and Zoe Finch Totten as speakers. I'm grateful to both of them for lending their voices and experience to our event.

That's just the tip of the iceberg! We've got a full day planned and it is packed with experts in population health. We'll have case studies from Emerson Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital. There will also be an amazing panel titled "Why Wellness? A Broader Look at Hospitals' Emerging Role in Promoting Good Health." Panelist will include Massachusetts State Representative Jason Lewis, Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health and Co-Founder of the legislature’s Prevention for Health Caucus; Lynn Nicholas, President & CEO of Massachusetts Hospital Association (previous winner of “Healthiest Workplace” Award from the Boston Business Journal); and Andrei Soran, Chief Executive Officer, MetroWest Medical Center. Zoe Finch Totten will serve as the panel moderator.

This is going to be an amazing day. The cost to attend is $149 for NESHCo and MHA members. I hope to see you there!
